The aim of this book is to provide the student of Japanese with a simple method for correlating the writing and the meaning of Japanese characters in such a way as to make them both easy to remember. It is intended not only for the beginner, but also for the more advanced student looking for some relief from the constant frustration of how to write the kanji and some way to systematize what he or she already knows. The author begins with writing because--contrary to first impressions--it is in fact the simpler of the two. He abandons the traditional method of ordering the kanji according to their frequency of use and organizes them according to their component parts or "primitive elements." Assigning each of these parts a distinct meaning with its own distinct image, the student is led to harness the powers of "imaginative memory" to learn the various combinations that result. In addition, each kanji is given its own key word to represent the meaning, or one of the principal meanings, of that character. These key words provide the setting for a particular kanji's "story," whose protagonists are the primitive elements. In this way, students are able to complete in a few short months a task that would otherwise take years. Armed with the same skills as Chinese or Korean students, who know the meaning and writing of the kanji but not their pronunciation in Japanese, they are now in a much better position to learn to read (which is treated in a separate volume). Surdam deconstructs this idyllic period to show that while the Yankees piled on pennants and World Series titles through the 1950s, Major League Baseball attendance consistently declined and gate-revenue disparity widened through the mid-1950s. Contrary to popular belief, the era was already experiencing many problems that fans of today's game bemoan, including a competitive imbalance and callous owners who ran the league like a cartel. Fans also found aging, decrepit stadiums ill-equipped for the burgeoning automobile culture, while television and new forms of leisure competed for their attention. Through an economist's lens, Surdam brings together historical documents and off-the-field numbers to reconstruct the period and analyze the roots of the age's enduring mythology, examining why the Yankees and other New York teams were consistently among baseball's elite and how economic and social forces set in motion during this golden age shaped the sport into its modern incarnation.

If life in time is imminent and means an always open future, what role remains for the past? If time originates from that relationship to the future, then the past can only be a fictitious beginning, a necessary phantom of a starting point, a retroactively generated chronological period of "before." Advanced in philosophical thought of the last two centuries, this view of the past permeated the study on the Talmud as well, resulting in application of modern philosophical categories of the "thinking subject", subjectivity, and time to thinking about thinking displayed in the texts of the Talmud. This book challenges that application. Departing from the hitherto prevalent view of thinking in the Talmud in terms of anonymous thinking subjects, called "redactors" or "designer" of Talmudic discussions, the book reconsiders the modern reduction of the past to a chronological period in time, and reclaims the originary power (and authority) the past exerts in thinking and remembering displayed both in the conversations the characters in the Talmud have, and in the literary design of these conversations. Central for that task of reclaiming the radical role of the past are contrasting medieval notions of the virtual and their modern appropriations, thinking subject among them, which serve as both a bridging point and a demarcation between the practices of thinking of, and remembering, the past in the Talmud vis-a-vis other rhetorical and/or philosophical school and disciplines of thought. The Open Past suggests the possibility of understanding the conversations and the design of these conversations in the Talmud in terms of thinking in no time. This no time has several layers of meaning. In its weakest formulation, it means "in no single time" in the sense that the Talmudic conversations happen in no historically "real" time. More strongly put, it means, borrowing the language from film theory, that the Talmud requires a never consolidated difference between diegetical time, and the time of montage; which creates a no-one's time and place that in turn creates time and place for everyone else. Even more strongly, it means that performance of the conversations in the Talmud is constantly driven by, and towards, an always open past -- a power of that past is radically different from the power of either futuristic or chronological time.

Professional athletes lead what seem to us to be glamorous lives and make large, and sometimes huge, salaries. In schools, the athletes are often the formal and informal leaders, given recognition and honors. News of their suicides shocks us because, to the rest of us, these are the successful members of our society, often looked up to as heroes and role models. The book, therefore, explores the incidence of suicide in athletes and reviews the risk factors that increase the likelihood of suicide in athletes. Research on these risk factors, such as the role of steroids and concussions, is reviewed, and case studies are provided to illustrate these risk factors. Some of the topics include: suicide in baseball and cricket; how steroids is often linked to suicide, as well as concussion and traumatic brain injury; how social relationships of athletes, including suicide among lesbian, gay and bisexual athletes, and sexual abuse, can lead to suicide; suicide as a result of bullying among high school and college athletes and suicide contagion; how spectators’ involvement in sports can be related to suicide; and the effect of retirement on athletes, psychiatric problems among athletes, and how substance abuse among athletes can cause suicide, along with many other topics. The book concludes with ways in which suicide might be prevented in athletes. It will be of great interest to crisis workers and those who work in crisis centers, as well as suicidologists, mental health workers, and others interested in the topic.

After the fall of Saddam Hussein and his regime in 2003 the facts in this book were confirmed. Many of Uday Hussein's employees found new masters over the years since my flight from Iraq, some work for the US intelligence services, some for the UK, but no matter how they may try to discredit me and my story the facts remain and as you now know I had already put them on paper in 1992, eleven years before the regime fell. I did not have a crystal ball to know all these things, I knew them because I was there, that was my life. Uday's employees have admitted in the Western media to being Pimps for him, they also admit to working as spies against him for the US and the UK intelligence services in return for citizenship of the respective country, what I ask is this, If a man is willing to sell women to a man that he knows to be a sadist, if he is willing to sell his country and himself, is it not then conceivable that he will sell his soul and say anything for money? I have paid a high price for my refusal to co-operate with the intelligence services, the CIA in particular, after twenty years in the West I am still stateless, I cannot return to Iraq because the new Government consider me a colaborator of the Hussein regime, although while they were in oppossition to Saddam they found my book to be a useful tool against him and his regime. Saddam while in power considered me a traitor. I do not regret my decision to leave Iraq or write my story, but I have not found the Western governments to be as open and democratic as they were portrayed to us in the Middle-East. In my search for a new counry to call home, I have found that those whose story is a fabrication are given the protection of the state as they are no threat, money is their only goal in life so they will not rock the boat', while I, who have an opinion and voice it openly (that is probably my biggest problem) am ignored, refused and while not told to leave am not made especially welcome either, I am tolerated. I do not nor did I ever seek fame, I have not made money from my story and if I do it will go to charity. It amuses me how the tables turn, when Saddam was in power my book was held up in the US Congress and given as a reason for Saddam's removal, now that Saddam is gone those that once used my story for their benefit have tried to denounce me, I have been interviewed by the world's biggest and best names over 1,800 TV, Print and Radio, journalist's who do their research and know who to ask for opinion, the old guard who took pride in their work and valued their reputation. While there are still some true journalists out there many work to order if their editor wants a specific story they make it, true or not, there is no oversight. Although it was never my intention, this book has been used as propaganda for the War on Iraq, my intention when I wrote it was to open the eyes of the world to the horrors and atrocities committed by the regime and to spur the Iraqi people into action. It will always disturb me that the Iraqi people never had a chance to participate in The Arab Spring and depose Saddam and his regime themselves, It may be a very different place today if they had had the chance to do so. Ia dikenal sebagai ulama yang menguasai fiqih dan hadist serta ilmu pengobatan Beliau menulis buku ini setelah melakukan riset mendalam tentang hubungan antara laki-laki dan perempuan, untuk menjelaskan prinsip-prinsip apa saja yang dapat membahagiakan laki-laki dan perempuan, berdasarkan karakter, temperamen, dan kesehatannya. Pada tahun 1850 buku tersebut diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Perancis oleh pegawai kolonialis Perancis di Tunisia. Buku tersebut menimbulkan kehebohan, terutama kalangan gereja. Pada saat itu masyarakat Eropa dan khususnya gereja, memandang seks sebagai sesuatu yang kotor dan dosa (sex is a sin), dan tabu membicarakannya. Karenanya fihak gereja menetapkan posisi seks suami istri hanya boleh dilakukan dengan gaya misionary position dan harus dilakukan secepat mungkin. Berbeda dengan pandangan islam, seks bukanlah sesuatu yang kotor, tetapi suci dan bahkan bernilai ibadah,dengan syarat dilakukan oleh suami istri yang sah telah menikah. Membicarakan seks bukanlah hal yang tabu dalam islam. Ada beberapa hadis-hadis dan pendapat para ulama yang berisi panduan dari Rasulullah SAW , para sahabat dan para ulama tentang hubungan suami istri. Berikut ini beberapa di antaranya. Ada hadis yang menjelaskan bahwa dalam hubungan suami istri hendaknya dilakukan dengan pendahuluan terlebih dahulu, atau dalam bahasa sekarang istilahnya adalah ‘foreplay’. Sabda Rasulullah SAW: “Janganlah antara kamu melakukan hubungan badan dengan isterinya seperti binatang. Sebaiknya mereka melakukan dua perkara terlebih dulu.” Sahabat bertanya, apa dua perkara itu? Rasulullah menjawab “kecupan dan kata-kata mesra” (Hadis riwayat Dailami). Dalam hadis tersebut nampak bahwa ada hal tentang seks yang tidak difahami oleh sahabat, sehingga kemudian mereka bertanya lalu Rasulullah SAW menjelaskan. Dari hadis ini dapat diambil pelajaran bahwa menjadi tanggung jawab bagi seorang pemimpin dan guru untuk menerangkan sesuatu yang kurang difahami dalam soal hubungan kelamin / seks, dan hal ini bukanlah sesuatu yang memalukan. Di dunia pesantren sex education diajarkan dalam bentuk nadzham (syair yang dilagukan), dan Nadzham yang populer di dunia pesantren adalah Nazham Qurotul Uyun, karangan Ibnu Yamun.
